I Can't Think Straight

If coming out narratives starring beautiful women make a film good enough to float your boat then you won't go wrong here, but I needed a bit more of pretty much everything to really get excited about this. Pretty to look at with some worthy moments, but not a great film.

Here Come the Girls 1

A short film collection with some very high highs and some very low lows. Worth checking out for the wonderfully haunting Congratulations Daisy Graham, and the lush period details of Private Life. The collection is also star-studded with lesbian short film names and players.

Sydney Lightswitch Screening in June

The people who made new Australian lesbian short film Lightswitch have asked me to let you all know that they've organised a Sydney screening in the Everest Theatre at the Seymour Centre on June 6th, 2009 at 7pm. You can get more information at the Lightswitch website. I haven't seen it yet so can't report either way, but I'll be at the screening to see for myself. Come along and support short filmmaking in Australia.

Love on the Side

Fairly predictable RomCom that should come with a schmaltz and cheese warning, but diverting enough to while away a lazy evening. What the plot lacks in originality the actors make up for in enthusiasm, but it will disappoint anyone looking for substance, or a lesbian happy ending. 2.5 stars.

Site News!

This just in. Yours truly will be one of the guest reviewers for the Sydney Morning Herald's Sydney Film Festival coverage! Run over and take a look starting this weekend to catch me and four other reviewers dishing on the good, the bad and the horribly surrealist. This will go on for two awesome, exhausting weeks as I live the not-so-glamorous life of a professional film reviewer. Each weekend the SMH will publish the best of the reviews in their Metro section. Wish me luck!

The Gymnast

The director is clever enough not to stray too far from his main premise, two jaw-dropping women who fall in love and perform astounding feats of acrobatics. Their chemistry crackles with life, and all the rest is just stripped away. This is so how I wish all movies were made - sparingly, with purpose and power. 4 stars.
