Classic: A road movie with a twist, this underrated Hollywood classic will have you weeping by the end, and with good reason. These three actresses amp the emotion up to critical levels, but somehow avoid being sickly and melodramatic. A pitch perfect dramedy that stands the test of time.
I like movies that aren't afraid to talk. Sometimes it's messy, sometimes it's long-winded, but Trigger had something real to say, about love, friendship, loyalty, illness, and women in the music industry.
But I'm A Cheerleader has all the calling cards of a Waters film: the pastiche, the humour, the melodrama, but tends also towards the slapstick and gross-out humour that is so popular in the teen film market. It is perfectly placed as a great film homage, but stands a little shakily on its own merits.
The storyline for All Over Me might be above and beyond anything that most teenagers experience but the fundamental emotional responses the main characters have to their situations are so universal that the film still feels relevant years after its release. This is an important, totally underrated lesbian film, which is not bad for a film where the word "lesbian" is not once uttered.
This is a harsh film, and if it weren’t for the wit, warmth and palpable love between these characters I think the compounded tragedy of the film would be unbearable. Gina Gershon shows once againshe’s capable of outstanding acting when given the right skin to inhabit.
This film is a testament to the power of the idea. Just a few good scenes, some charming actors and voila! A decent, quirky, urban comedy. Made in a matter of weeks with just a Woody Allen-inspired script, no money and a lot of passion, it was a cinematic success story, lesbians and all.
