the nightwatch

The film rips along at a cracking pace - at times too fast -  trying to fit an awful lot into 90 minutes. Sarah Waters continues her reign as the queen of lesbian historical fiction, and each time someone has picked up the adaptation mantle, there's been obvious effort to do her brilliant characters the justice they so deserve.

tipping the velvet

From the corset kings of the world, the BBC, comes an adaptation so lush that it might just rival the 1996 remake of Pride and Prejudice as my favourite costume drama of all time. I bet when they were making stodgy Shakespeare adaptations in the fifties the powers that be at the BBC never thought costume drama would ever come to this.

Fingersmith is a lavish, sensual BBC production of a Sarah Waters novel that hits all the right emotional notes and has become a huge fan favourite. I found it was a solid, engaging story and a beautiful visual experience, but I missed some of the exquisite detail from the novel that would have rounded it all out perfectly.
