the nightwatch

The film rips along at a cracking pace - at times too fast -  trying to fit an awful lot into 90 minutes. Sarah Waters continues her reign as the queen of lesbian historical fiction, and each time someone has picked up the adaptation mantle, there's been obvious effort to do her brilliant characters the justice they so deserve.

appropriate behaviour

Shirin is a self-involved narcissist going through one heck of a break up and emotional meltdown. This is an always passionate, sometimes disjointed, darkly funny, unique ride through the life of somebody we initially don't care about very much, but as Shirin conquers her own identity crisis, we come to understand her, and start to become engaged with her despite ourselves.

sugar rush 2

Sugar Rush 2 is that rare beast, a sequel that surpasses the original. It's moments like this I realise that I really love good television writing. Damn those Brits, having all the fun. Great writing, great music, great acting, great sex, just all-round great TV.

tipping the velvet

From the corset kings of the world, the BBC, comes an adaptation so lush that it might just rival the 1996 remake of Pride and Prejudice as my favourite costume drama of all time. I bet when they were making stodgy Shakespeare adaptations in the fifties the powers that be at the BBC never thought costume drama would ever come to this.

a village affair

Take one coming-out-when-older storyline. Push in some farce. Add one quaint English village. Stir frequently. That'll give you the idea. There was a moment or two while skinny dipping in the pond when I thought the ladies were going to get all D.H. Lawrence on us, but to no avail.
